List Prof. Lecha Wojtczaka, Prezesa Polskiego Towarzystwa Biochemicznego, do Komisarza Janeza Potocnika w sprawie przygotowywanej Dyrektywy KE 86/609 dotyczącej wykorzystania zwierząt w badaniach naukowych
25 February 2008
Commissioner Janez Potocnik
Directorate-General for Research
European Commission
SDME 2/2

Dear Mr. Potocnik
The Polish Biochemical Society, as a member of the European
Coalition for Biomedical Research, is vividly interested in
amending European regulations on the use of animals for
experimental and other scientific purposes. We have been
informed that the revision of Directive 86/609 is now in its
final phase within the European Commission and we are
looking forward to see the formulation of its final text.
Although we have not seen this text, we are concerned that
it might be too bureaucratic and place too great a burden of
regulation upon animal research, which will result in delays
to important areas on biomedical science in Europe.
Therefore want to ask you to do your best that the text does
not place an unnecessary burden of regulation on animal
research and that the new regulation be free of excessive
bureaucracy that may cause delays to research projects and
could result in European research becoming less
internationally competitive.
Hoping for full understanding of our position,
with kind regards,
Prof. Lech Wojtczak, PhD
